The Philosophy Club Debates

Vigorous intellectual exchange can both clarify issues and stir passions. Clarity and passion are both necessary for increased comprehension. Our Philosophy Club Debaters are dedicated to raising important questions in incisive ways while displaying and inciting appropriate emotional reactions to the issues.

The Debates are three-sided affairs, thus pointedly reminding the audience that usually there are more than two alternatives to be considered when addressing any topic. The debaters begin with tightly reasoned opening presentations of their main arguments. In the subsequent two rounds of rebuttal both arguments and insults fly. The debaters respond with passion; the audience shows its approval or disapproval--about both the quality of insult and the quality of argument. At the end questions for the debaters are raised by the audience.

Nothing is resolved, but members of the audience leave with a hightened awareness of the issues and perhaps with greater concern and feeling for the debated topic.
