The Timocratic Soul This soul is dominated by the spirited and honor-loving part. Inside, the little person has a higher place than the appetites. This is the 2nd-best soul type, for to acquire respect and admiration one must usually do some good things. "Doing the right thing" is a means to gaining honor, and is not done for its own sake. Republic Bk 8, 548d-549b: . . . in his love of victory, he'd be like Glaucon . . . but more stubborn . . . he likes to listen to a good speech, but isn't a good speaker himself . . . he's very obedient to rulers, for he himself is a lover of ruling and honors . . . exploits in warfare and similar activities. Bk 9, 581a-e: . . . isn't the spirited part wholly devoted to ruling and conquering and getting fame? . . . so we would call it victory- loving or ambitious? . . . Will he not think that the pleasure of riches is vulgar, while the pleasure of learning, if it brings no honor or fame, is all smoke and nonsense to him? |
