Here is what some professional schools in Kentucky and adjoining states say about undergraduate preparation, on their web pages. Click on the school name to link to that web site. Think about these comments as you plan your undergraduate course selections!
UK MED SCHOOL: "You are encouraged to pursue a broad and rigorous undergraduate curriculum. It is neither expected nor required that you major in a science field. You may choose any major you wish, as long as you successfully complete the required prerequisite courses."
CINCINNATI MED SCHOOL: "All majors are valued. Students are expected to engage in a rigorous academic program that enables them to . . . Understand the basic principles of the sciences fundamental to medicine and to appreciate the psychosocial nature of man . . . Have at least the knowledge usually obtained in one-year courses in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and mathematics . . . Have an understanding of the basic social, cultural, and behavioral factors that influence individuals, families, and communities . . . Have acquired effective learning, communication, and problem solving skills . . ."
UK DENTAL SCHOOL: "The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry seeks applicants who are well-educated in the liberal arts and sciences. Individuals are encouraged to pursue baccalaureate studies that reflect their unique abilities and interests. However, it should be noted that a solid foundation in the biological and natural sciences is an integral part of any sound liberal arts and sciences education. The traditional pre-health professions curriculum, heavily focused on the sciences, should be pursued only if that is the student's desire.
LOUISVILLE MED SCHOOL: "In selecting courses, the premedical student should be aware of the broad scope of the medical profession. . . . To be successful, medical students must be able to read rapidly and with understanding. They also must be able to express thoughts clearly and concisely. Premedical students should develop a solid background in the humanities, philosophy and the arts. Understanding human relationships and human nature is vital to the practice of medicine. Students are encouraged to take courses which would be difficult to acquire after the college experience is completed. The School of Medicine seeks to admit well-rounded students with broad backgrounds and diverse experiences."
EAST TENNESSEE MED SCHOOL: "With the exception of the required courses noted above, applicants are strongly urged to follow their own personal interests in developing their premedical course of study. Undergraduate majors in the humanities or sciences are equally acceptable."
INDIANA MED SCHOOL: ". . . It is also expected that successful applicants will have included in their undergraduate experience a significant number of courses in the humanities and social and behavioral sciences. In this fashion students gain a better understanding of contemporary society and human experience, and greater insight into their patients' backgrounds, problems, and illnesses."
OHIO STATE MED SCHOOL: "Diverse interests and backgrounds are helpful in establishing a balanced view of society necessary for success in medical practice. Thus candidates are encouraged to include such subjects as philosophy, literature, writing, history, arts and languages . . ."
WRIGHT STATE (OHIO) MED SCHOOL: "While a basic understanding of the physical and biological sciences is important to a medical education, a broad appreciation of individuals and their social, cultural, and artistic efforts is equally necessary."
Hmmm . . . seems they're looking for folks who've not spent all their electives on just science courses!
