Harvey Siegel, Multiculturalism and the Possibility of Transcultural Educational and Philosophical Ideals. Philosophy 74, 1999.

1)  Summarize in one nice sentence why Siegel values multiculturalism.  Or does he ever say why?

2) On 393 (bottom) and 394 (top) Siegel mentions equivocation.  What in general (if anything) is bad about equivocating?  And what, in particular, is the equivocation problem he finds in some who advocate multiculturalism?

3) Explain what his wallpaper-removing example is supposed to illustrate.

4) 401:  Siegel says that the multiculturalist argument also presupposes another sort of transculturalism.  So, he presents two (or more?) sorts of transculturalism.  List and briefly explain each one.

5) State what you find to be Siegel's main conclusion; then list the fundamental reasons he offers in support of it.

6) Briefly give -- and explain -- your assessment of the argument you summarized in 5).
