A. T. Nuyen, Vanity.  The Southern Journal of Philosophy (1999) Vol.37.
Plus NYTimes Magazine exerpts.

1)  Comment on several ways your NYTimes selection (plus ads, photos, etc.) does and/or doesn't accord with Nuyen's characterization of vanity.

2) Explain what, in contrast to Nuyen's account of vanity, would be the opposite of vanity.  Would this opposite characteristic be good and admirable?  Or, if vanity is a vice, would its opposite also be a vice?  Why, or why not?

3) How, according to Nuyen, does vanity differ from arrogance and from (self-)conceit?

4) Summarize what is bad about vanity from the a) Humean, b) Kantian, and c) Aristotelian viewpoints.  Which of the three seems most sensible to you, and why?
