Karl Popper, The Open Universe. 1988. (Selections)

Scratch out pages 131-154; they don't fit in!

1) Popper now and then speaks of openness (114, 126, 129-30, 155) and closedness (127, 130, 155) regarding his three worlds; apparently he thinks they are all "open."  Explain what he means by these terms "open" and "closed," and how his worlds, and his universe, are open.

2) He also speaks of autonomous and autonomy quite a bit.  What is this autonomy, and where exactly is it to be found in Popper's universe?

3) Compare Popper's notion of miracle (122-23) to that found in the Clarke article.

4) Why does he think that indeterminism not enough?

5) 130: "to understand human freedom we need more."  Characterize Popper's understanding of human freedom.
