First In-class Diagramming DA:

1. A science has to be able to make reliable predictions; thus economics is not a science,

because we all know that the predictions of economists are unreliable. We know this

because they so often predict just about the exact opposite of what actually happens!

2. Although scientists have been investigating the matter for over a hundred years, no one

has yet traced a direct line of ancestry from man back to apelike ancestors. Hence man

does not have apelike ancestors, since any such ancestors would have been identified by now.

3. Drunk drivers have been treated very leniently by the courts in recent years.

Here are the reasons I say this. I have looked at the court records in my

hometown for the last ten years, and no convicted drunk driver has ever

gotten the maximum sentence.

4. The more popular a soap opera is, the more unhappy the heroine of the story is. Thus

it is obvious that Erika, the heroine of "All My Children", will not live happily ever after

with Adam. For it was recently revealed that "All My Children" is the most popular of all

the soaps.

5. The widespread use of computers offers great benefits, but it also creates some rather

serious problems. Concern about some of these problems has been publicly expressed;

moreover, useful efforts have been made to solve them. However, there are other serious

problems that have been neglected.

6. They're not #1!  #1 has to play a tough schedule. They've got a cream-puff schedule.

7. Sexism and racism involve discrimination. But there is nothing wrong with

discrimination, because we have to discriminate every day. We discriminate

in buying cars and in choosing restaurants. We often praise people for

being discriminating. So there is nothing wrong with sexism and racism.

8. The philosophy of democracy is an optimistic one, for it is based on faith

in mankind. Thus democracy's hopes for the future have always been high.

Unfortunately, its memory of the past tends to be short.

9. For those patients who feel inadequate in the face of the competition and

hardships of ordinary life, discharge from the hospital may be threatening.

For it means that they will once again have to face the problems from which

their stay in the hospital has protected them.

10. Giving total political power to the citizens of a nation through majority

rule is a very dangerous thing. It is dangerous because a majority group can

become an evil dictator just as much as an individual like Hitler can. So

in democracies there should be limits on what can be done by majority vote.

11. The moon is a natural and almost ideal place for many industries. One reason

for this is that there would be no problems of disposing of hazardous

industrial wastes, since the moon has no air or water to be polluted.

Another is that it is probably a good source of minerals that are becoming

scarce on earth. And finally, on the moon you won't have to worry about

demonstrations and sit-ins by local residents!

12. Here is why it is sometimes possible for a nation to rightfully wage war.

Any nation has the natural right to do whatever is necessary to protect

itself from destruction. But at least occasionally the only way a nation

can avoid destruction is by defending itself against aggression through

warfare. Under such conditions, therefore, a nation has a perfect right to

go to war.

13. The Kentucky political system encourages state legislators to lean too

heavily on lobbyists. They rely on lobbyists so much because these professional

promoters are some of the most knowledgeable people in the capitol, and they

have eloquent arguments for their causes. In addition, they often have

informational handouts prepared, and legislators find these to be very

convenient to use as the sole basis for their votes, since they don't have the

time to do the research needed to form a more objective opinion of the proposed

legislation. They don't have the time because the legislative sessions always

come right after the elections, and they've been out campaigning instead of

studying the bills and issues they'll be voting on.

As a result, legislation which has strong public support but powerful

opposition from lobbyists gets defeated; and legislation gets passed which

favors special interests at the expense of public welfare.
